South Carolina golf resort beckons snowbirds

Winter?s arrival means just one thing: golf. Not here of course, but south of the border, where the fairways are green, not white. At South Carolina?s Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the ?Golf or Gourmet Escape? package offers savings of up to 45 per cent, combining accommodation with either two dinners at The Ocean Room or The Atlantic Room, or two rounds of golf, or one of each, for travel through Feb. 26. Two rounds on The Ocean Course - host of this year?s PGA Championship - and one night?s accommodation start at $300 (all prices U.S.) in the resort?s villas and $400 in The Sanctuary, Kiawah?s oceanfront hotel. Opting for a different golf course (Turtle Point, Osprey Point, Cougar Point or Oak Point) brings the price down further, starting at $200 for villa accommodation or $300 for The Sanctuary. The two-dinner packages (or one dinner and one round) lead in at similar rates, also with one night?s accommodation. See www.kiawahresort.com.

THIRD NIGHT SPECIAL

This is a big year for London. Not only is the city gearing up to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it?s also celebrating the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee marking the 60th year of her reign. The five-star Athenaeum is marking the occasion with a special deal, offering third nights at a discounted rate for stays through June 6. While the first two nights cost 299 pounds each - not surprising given the Athenaeum is a five-star luxury hotel, with a location right at Hyde Park - the third night is priced at 60 pounds, with accommodation in a deluxe guest room with free drinks, snacks and coffee from the mini-bar and free WiFi, plus kids under 12 eat free. Rooms are subject to availability and blackout dates may apply. See www.athenaeumhotel.com.

LITTLE INN?S ROBBIE BURNS NIGHT

The Little Inn of Bayfield?s annual tribute to all things Robbie Burns takes place Jan. 28 with packages including accommodation and dinner. The traditional Scottish menu will feature Cock-a-leekie soup, Haggis tourtiere complete with ?neeps and tatties? (rutabaga and potato), snail porridge (just what it sounds like), Black Angus short ribs and Tipsy Laird, Scotland?s famous trifle dessert and a mainstay of Robbie Burns dinners. Along with the dinner come five whisky drams and recitations by ?The Bard? played by Eric Coates, artistic director of the Blyth Festival Theatre. Prices start at $445 and also include a full breakfast. See www.littleinn.com.
