23 injured during stampede at Spanish bull run

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) ? The penultimate bull run of Spain's San Fermin festival left at least 23 people injured Saturday, when thrill-seekers fleeing the beasts were crushed at the narrow entrance to the bullring, officials said. Two of the injuries were gorings.

As the huge animals thundered into the entrance of the tunnel, they were blocked by a mound of dozens of people who had fallen and were piled on top of one other.

One bull that had fallen before the entrance got up and charged into the clogged passageway. Two steers jumped over the pile of people as they began to get up and flee.

A gate normally used to let regional police into ringside positions was pushed wide open by a flood of runners, causing an obstruction for others trying to enter the main arena, Interior Ministry regional spokesman Javier Morras said.

"We all know that alley is a funnel and a critically dangerous point at the entrance to the ring," Morras said. "Pileups there are one of the biggest risks that can occur in the running of the bulls," he said.

The blockage ended after attendants managed to let the beasts escape through a side door normally reserved for matadors.

Javier Sesma, a health spokesman for Navarra province, said two of the 23 injured people were gored by bulls and that the others were hurt in the stampede.

Sesma said one runner, a 19-year-old Spaniard from Vitoria city, was seriously injured when his thorax was crushed at the bull ring entrance. An Irish citizen also suffered asphyxia.

"His situation remains very grave, but he appears to be evolving favorably," Sesma said of the Spaniard. "We are hopeful. His life was at risk, but he is now more stable."

One person was gored in his buttock and another in an armpit during the 928-yard (850-meter) dash through Pamplona's narrow streets, the official said. Neither injury was serious, said the Navarra government, which organizes the annual festivities. One of those gored had received treatment in one of the two operating rooms at the bullring, Sesma said.

The rest of the injured sustained cuts and bruises.

Sesma said one spectator had a heart attack while watching the stampede. By early afternoon, nine of the injured had been discharged from hospitalization, Sesma said.

On Friday, the festival drew widespread attention when an American college student and two Spaniards were gored, and videos and photos of the attacks were seen around the world. Sesma said the American patient was "evolving favorably" in a hospital Saturday.

The number of revelers attending the festival tends to swell at weekends, causing the narrow streets of Pamplona to be thronged with runners, increasing the risk of pileups and injuries.

The festival in this northern city dates back to the late 16th century and also is known for its all-night street parties.

The runs, eight in all, are the highlight of a nine-day street festival to honor Pamplona's patron saint, San Fermin.

Each morning, six fighting bulls and six bell-tinkling steers that try to keep the beasts together head from stables to the ring where matadors will star in late afternoon bullfights.

The festivities, which end Sunday, were made famous by Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises."

The fiesta attracts tens of thousands of young people, many from abroad, eager to mix alcohol with the adrenaline of running alongside the massive bulls at 8 o'clock every morning.

Dozens of people are injured each year, with gorings often producing the most dramatic injuries.

The last fatal goring happened in 2009.

Countdown To The Eisners ? Best Comics-Related Periodical ...

By Cameron Hatheway

I was tremendously impressed by The Outhouse when they didn?t kowtow to DC earlier this year when asked to tone down the parodying or else their access to creators would be limited. Normally, a smaller comic book news site would apologize profusely and continue brownnosing the Big Two just to get those tasty exclusives, but not The Outhouse. They not only stood their ground, but they also got huge props from the rest of the comic community while making DC look like spineless shallow twerps in the process. Unfortunately almost every comic new site nowadays runs constant press releases, and never has a bad thing to say about the comic books being released. ?Everything is amazing! Go spend your money on it! Tune in tomorrow for our exclusive interview with Joey DiDio!? Every now and then you?ll get some actual honest reviews and reporting, but people would rather just read the headline instead of the entire article. Today I?ll be focusing on the Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism category. If you need a reminder of what?s been nominated, you can find the entire list right here, and see what I chose last time right here.

Keep in mind I cannot vote for who wins (nor can you, probably), as per the rules. However, that?s not keeping me from being vocal regardless!

Who is not eligible to vote?

  • Comics press or reviewers (unless they are nominees)
  • Non-creative publisher staff members (PR, marketing, assistants, etc.)
  • Fans

Before I get back to pleading Heidi for a gig at The Beat so I can be eligible for next year, let the games begin!

Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism

Alter Ego, edited by Roy Thomas (TwoMorrows)

Packed to the gills with comic book history and edited by comic book legend Roy Thomas, Alter Ego provides fans of new and old with a plethora of information paired with some amazing art from the vaults. It?s fascinating reading some interviews with comic creators from the Golden and Silver Ages, and Alter Ego really transports you back to that exciting period of time for comics.

ComicsAlliance, edited by Joe Hughes, Caleb Goellner, and Andy Khouri

Rest in peace, ComicsAlliance. What?s that? They?re no longer pining for the fjords? Oh well in that case, while I?m not a fan of the scrolling blog layout, it is nice having the different sections easily accessible at the top of the website. They publish press releases, conduct interviews, and have different fun segments. I do enjoy their opinions section the most.

The Comics Reporter, edited by Tom Spurgeon

Again, not a fan of the scrolling blog layout, but I do enjoy that my eyes aren?t assaulted with press releases left and right, but rather actual articles covering topics that slipped through the cracks. It?s as if Tom enjoys talking about the things he wants to talk about, and because he?s being himself people enjoy visiting his site. I really enjoy his day to day commentary.

Robot Six, produced by Comic Book Resources

The geeky loner younger brother of the douchebag jock CBR, Robot Six covers the stories that you actually care about. Ranging from reviews, interviews, commentary and more, it?s almost as if such a subsection on CBR shouldn?t exist since they?re not kissing the Big Two?s asses 24/7.

tcj.com, edited by Timothy Hodler and Dan Nadel (Fantagraphics)

Always a delight to visit, The Comics Journal has such an inviting website with endless possibilities when it comes to what section to navigate first. Tons of great columns, reviews, and features, followed by the familiar print edition of the magazine published by Fantagraphics. The Comics Journal #302 by itself is awesome and deserves the win.

the_comics_journal_302Who I think should win:
tcj.com, edited by Timothy Hodler and Dan Nadel (Fantagraphics)

Whenever I?m about to go on a trip of any sort, I always try to bring a print edition of The Comics Journal with me because I know it?ll keep me sane throughout the duration of the flight / train ride / car ride. It?s just completely abundant with fascinating stories, history, and interviews, that I feel so uninformed yet excited to love the comic book medium all over again.

The website is a must bookmark as well, for there?s always something new to check out, and just like when playing video games, you definitely lose track of time. Lots of love goes into that site, it?s certainly palpable.

Who I think could win:
Alter Ego, edited by Roy Thomas (TwoMorrows)

I feel that Alter Ego is a must-read for newer comic book fans (hell, comic book fans in general), for many don?t know about what comics used to be like. They don?t know about the legends of the industry, be it Joe Kubert or Jack Kirby, and what the atmosphere was like at times. These youngin?s need to be informed!

Thankfully, Alter Ego does just that, while being available in both print and digital (print $8, digital $3) no matter what your poison is.

Who I think should have been nominated:
iFanboy.com, by Josh Flanagan, Conor Kilpatrick, Ron Richards, Paul Montgomery, et al.,

Whenever I feel that everyone is reporting on the same thing, I head on over to iFanboy and they always seem to have a fresh new spin on things. Their articles are always fun to read, and the vibe on the site is a very cool and relaxed one. Everyone?s there to celebrate comics, plain and simple.

Who do you think should win / been nominated?

Pacific Rim - IMAX 3D Review | AVForums.com - UK Online

"We always thought alien life would come from the stars, but it came from deep beneath the sea. A portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean."

Gleefully stealing from every Japanese mecha robot vs. alien anime ever created - most notably the seminal Neon Genesis Evangelion - acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro's mega-budget Summer blockbuster Pacific Rim is far more than just the Transformers vs. Godzilla mutation that fans were worried it would turn out to be. Unlike its lesser counterparts, Del Toro's beast blends genuine consequence into the mix, putting human lives at the heart of his skyscraper-sized creations and pitting them against increasingly dangerous monsters that are remarkably hard to kill. Spectacular and satisfying in equal measure, Pacific Rim might not quite tower over this year's other Summer super-sized blockbuster fares, but it still has the edge over them.

Throwing us right in the deep end, Pacific Rim fast-tracks us through the early stages of a war that erupts between human forces and alien monsters - Kaiju - that arrive through a portal which appears in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. After the first monsters took their toll on the cities attacked, the world united to create an effective defence ? the Jaegers. Giant robots controlled by two human pilots whose minds are synched not only with the robot, but also with one another. The two must work as a team to control the Jaegers. Initially, they prove to be tough enough to take on the creatures, but as the years pass, the Kaiju adapt and grow stronger. Soon, even the Jaegers won't be enough.

?The first Kaiju made land in San Francisco, the second attacked Manilla, then the third hit Cabo. Then we learned... this was not going to stop.?

Pacific Rim thunders out of the gate with a stunning extended opening sequence that sets up the premise for the story. Two brothers ? compatible due to the ?drift? connection with each other and, thus, with the Jaeger ? are lowered down in what seems like a huge lift. You soon realise that they are strapped into pilot seats within the massive solid metal head of the actual Jaeger robot. It lands on the body and grinds into place. The steel beast whirrs and groans and roars to life, rolled out slowly on giant tracks before being deployed directly into the Ocean. Its nickname? Gypsy Danger.

It steps from the shore and crashes through the waves, heading towards a small fishing boat which is sitting in the path of an equally imposing creature ? a class 3 Kaiju. Nicknamed Knifehead because of its protruding head ? which looks like that of a Goblin shark ? the Kaiju is the biggest ever encountered, but Gypsy Danger thunders at it, driven on furiously by the determined brothers piloting it. They grab and secure the boat, spinning out of the reach of the angry attacking Kaiju, before charging up their plasma fist ready to launch a blast right into the heart of the monster. Waves crash, metal grinds, the beast roars, and the night erupts with thunder and lightning.

?In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own.?

Whilst director Guillermo Del Toro asserts that Pacific Rim was born out of a daydream he had whilst staring out at the ocean ? imagining a giant robot fighting a giant monster out in the mist ? I doubt that even he would be able to deny the inspiration born from Japanese anime which have some very similar themes (if he did, it would be almost as silly as when the woman who wrote The Hunger Games ? Suzanne Collins ? denied knowing anything about Battle Royale). If you?ve never heard of Neon Genesis Evangelion, then you really should rectify that. The recent Evangelion ?remake? ? a CG anime of outstanding scale and quality ? is pretty-much the benchmark in terms of monster vs. mecha action. Its narrative also involves strange alien monsters which attack the Earth, one by one ? each one bigger and more powerful than the last ? and military forces who desperately construct giant robots to take them down ? each one piloted by a human who has to fuse their mind with the robot in order to pilot it, and therefore feels pain when it gets damaged. With each landing, cities are levelled, and monsters, mechas ? or even sometimes both ? are torn apart in the battle.

To deny the similarities would be akin to suggesting that Fincher?s remake of The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo was an original film. Thankfully, however, Pacific Rim finds originality in other places ? it is, after all, the first live action movie to attempt this kind of scale of mayhem. What?s that? ?Transformers?, I hear you mutter under your breath. Well forget Transformers. As much as I was filled with joy when I first heard that distinctive ?Transformers transform? sound and saw Optimus Prime come to life for the first time, the two mind-numbing sequels have drained away much of that initial pleasure and it?s Del Toro that finally sets the record straight ? it?s not just about giant robots thumping each other through buildings (or superheroes, for that matter, as Man of Steel foolishly digressed into), but also actually about impact... and consequence.

?We needed a new weapon. The Jaeger program was born. Two pilots: our minds; our memories connected. Man and machine became one.?

Putting humans at the very heart of the metal beasts is integral to drawing the audience into the action. Seeing a giant robot lose an arm to a giant monster may be spectacular, but it means nothing without the added edge of having the human pilot suffering pain as a direct result. Similarly, seeing a robot crushed, and torn apart, and submerged under water means little until you realise that the human pilots within are going to drown with it.

Providing the human element we get relative newcomer Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) making a Big Screen name for himself as one of the best Jaeger pilots around, unfortunately hampered by the weight of a past tragedy. He?s actually pretty good in the part, blending the charm and arrogance of Cruise?s Top Gun Maverick with the brute force and, erm, arrogance of Chris Hemsworth?s Thor. Babel?s Rinko Kikuchi plays another potential pilot, who is also full of grief and haunted by horrific memories from the early Kaiju attacks, and who therefore finds a connection with Hunnam?s brash lead pilot. Del Toro does a nice job at painting their backstories, and adopts a fairly original approach in this regard ? using their mind-melding ?connection? to allow insight into what has happened to them.

The same goes for Idris Elba who, from the trailers, looked like he might have only got a silly cheesy drill instructor part with a dodgy accent. After Del Toro toyed with the idea of putting Cruise in the part (following their failed attempt to get H.P. Lovecraft?s At the Mountains of Madness off the ground), Elba was picked to play Marshall Stacker Pentecost (!!) due to his work on the excellent Brit TV series Luther and, whilst his role here isn?t anywhere near as substantial as that ? let alone as powerful as his contribution to The Wire ? he still does a good job; his research involving Obama speeches and channelling Russell Crowe?s Gladiator and Gibson?s Braveheart climaxing in that rousing soundbite (which should have been saved for the movie rather than rinsed on the trailers) but Del Toro?s interest in a slightly more worthy backstory having a far more satisfying effect.

?Today, at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen to believe in each other. Today, we face the monsters that are at our door. Today, we are cancelling the apocalypse!?

Of course a Del Toro movie would never be the same without a bunch of oddball characters ? normally scientists ? as well as a larger-than-life part for Del Toro regular Ron Perlman (Blade II, Hellboy). Thankfully Del Toro reins-in any overt Jar-Jar Bink-isms, and instead manages to just about land his humour and quirkiness on the right side, without drifting into audience irritation territory.

Where he excels, however, is in the action. Whilst some fans might have actually expected more ? and I, for one, would have loved to have seen more from the first five years of the ?War? (although I understand why they had to skip to the end) ? the action sequences are as big, bold and spectacular as you could have possibly hoped for. It?s not wall-to-wall ? there?s a solid opening salvo; and then a trio of latter-end confrontations that get increasingly chaotic ? but it is stunning.

And Del Toro might have done a surprising about-turn when it comes to 3D-ifying his feature, but, don?t forget, however much you might question the quality of the ?converted? 2D live-action sequences, the CG battles were entirely crafted in native 3D. And they look pretty amazing. The best 3D action I've seen in a while.

The mecha Jaegers have each been specifically tailored to reflect the country of origin ? the Russian Cherno Alpha looks like a walking nuclear power plant; the Chinese Crimson Typhoon is a three-armed-warrior style robot; and the distinctive American Gypsy Danger was given an Art Deco style, complete with the swagger and gait of John Wayne. The Kaijus were also given distinctive looks ? sharks, crustaceans, dragons ? whilst also paying a passing nod to the Godzilla monsters of old in that they each have the basic silhouette of the classic ?man-in-a-suit?. These are some of the most effective building-sized CG creations ever featured in a movie, and the toe-to-toe skirmishes are increasingly potent, with metal-grinding, ground-pounding, hull-tearing impact to them.

?Two thousand five hundred tons of awesome.?

Blending themes and ideas you might find familiar from everything from Firefox to Top Gun; from Independence Day to Jurassic Park; from Reel Steel to Avatar, Pacific Rim blasts past its Transformers-meets-Godzilla labelling and resounds as the closest thing we?ll likely ever get to a live action Evangelion movie, which, in case you didn?t know, is a hell of a compliment. It provides action with impact; confrontation with consequence; spectacle with significance ? it may not be a particularly weighty affair and, no doubt, there will be plenty of hardcore Del Toro fans who somehow expected far more than this from him but, with respect, I think that they are missing the point. This is the best giant robots vs. giant monsters summer blockbuster feature that anybody could have ever had any right to hope for. And I, for one, can?t wait for the next one. Well worth seeing on the biggest (3D IMAX) screen you can find, it comes recommended.

Go big or go extinct indeed.

Pacific Rim game arrives on iOS and Android

Warner Bros. Pictiures? epic giant monster vs. giant robot action movie Pacific Rim released in theaters this week. As has often become the case these days, a movie tie-in game is not far behind thus we now have the Pacific Rim game on iOS and Android.

Developed by the Indian company Reliance Games, the Pacific Rim game is naturally based on the movie and brings some of the robot vs. monster action to the small screen.

If you were expecting some original gameplay, however, you are going to be in for some disappointment. Although the game lets you choose from five different robots, known as jaegers, and the visuals seem pretty decent, the gameplay is a clone of the screen swiping and the occasional pressing of buttons on the side to dodge action that we first saw in Infinity Blade almost three years ago and in several other games over the years, including Batman: Arkham City Lockdown and Man of Steel. Although it does seem appropriate here but the lack of novelty is sure to bore you quickly.

The Pacific Rim game is available on the App Store and the Play Store for a steep $4.99. Personally, it doesn?t seem like something I?d spend five bucks on.

2 sides, 2 stories on Senate showdown

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The immediate and the institutional are on a collision course in the Senate, where majority Democrats want to erode the right of minority Republicans to block confirmation of President Barack Obama's picks for administration posts.

On one side is the fate of a handful of appointees. "We shouldn't be waiting around here for months and months and months to get a vote on one of these nominees," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Friday, as he and Democrats threatened to make a unilateral change in the rules.

Reid simultaneously pushed ahead on seven Obama nominees whom Republicans have blocked from receiving a yes-or-no vote. One, Richard Cordray, has been in confirmation limbo for more than two years. Few, if any, are said by their critics to be unqualified to hold office, and all could command majority support but have appeared to lack the 60 votes needed to overcome GOP delaying tactics.

On the other side is the near certainty that once weakened, the rights of the Senate minority would be reduced even further the next time the majority party wants to jam through a four-year Cabinet appointment or a lifetime seat for a justice whose confirmation might tilt the balance of power on the Supreme Court for a decade or more.

"I guarantee you, it's a decision that, if they actually go through with it, they will live to regret," the Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said of the Democrats.

In an institution that takes pride in calling itself "the greatest deliberative body in the world," that's a prediction that rings increasingly hollow among Democrats. More than half of the party's rank and file have never experienced life in the Senate minority, and much of the impetus for the rules changes comes from them.

One, Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, said Republican tactics run counter to the system that James Madison and Alexander Hamilton helped set up more than two centuries ago. Another, Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico, said the GOP was perpetuating a "tyranny of the minority."

A third, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, a former governor, said any president should be able to have a team in place, and "unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the case" as a result of Republicans.

Across the political aisle, it's the more senior Republicans who warn of the long-term effects on the Senate if Reid carries out his threat.

"I've been in both the majority and the minority a number of times, and I have to tell you'd I'd fight to my death for the rights of the minority because that's one way that the United States Senate is the most important legislative body in the world," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, first elected in 1976.

Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, first elected in 1980, said, "Basically, what you're doing is destroying the Constitution if we go ahead with this, if it destroys the checks and balances that the Senate is, the only institution in our political system where minority views are protected."

In classic Senate fashion, the more heated the rhetoric, the most intense the search for a compromise. All 100 senators have been invited to a meeting Monday, with the press and public barred, to seek a compromise that a handful are now exploring.

For now, each side has its own version of the facts.

McConnell says the entire episode is an attempt by Reid to win confirmation for a pair of union-backed members of the National Labor Relations Board who were seated without Senate confirmation. The two, Richard Griffin and Sharon Block, were given recess appointments by Obama. An appeals court has ruled that he exceeded his authority, and the board's actions since they took their seats are in legal limbo.

On Thursday, McConnell said "Big Labor" was putting pressure on Reid, and he offered to expedite consideration of two replacements for Griffin and Block if Obama chose to appoint them. It's an offer that officials say he's made before.

McConnell also noted that in recent weeks Republicans have permitted speedy confirmation of Obama's second-term secretaries of commerce and transportation, a new budget director and numerous judges.

As Reid threatened to change the rules, Republicans also abruptly announced they would step aside and permit confirmation of Tom Perez as labor secretary, and Gina McCarthy to head of the Environmental Protection Agency. So, too Fred P. Hochberg, named to head the Export-Import Bank, one of the seven on Reid's roster but only recently approved by committee and not long on the wait-list.

Finally, McConnell says he and Reid agreed earlier this year not to support any changes in the rules except in the traditional way, by a two-thirds majority, requiring bipartisan agreement.

The way Reid explains it, well-qualified nominees are confirmed with little or no opposition ? after Republicans delay a vote for months on end. In some cases, he said, GOP senators object simply because "they refuse to accept the law of the land." He cited Cordray, named in 2011 to lead the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, and McCarthy at EPA.

He accuses McConnell of failing to live up to last winter's agreement to work on nominations "consistent with the norms and traditions of the Senate."

Since then, Reid said, Republicans had mounted the first ever filibuster against a nominee, Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense, who eventually was confirmed. John Brennan's appointment as head of the Central Intelligence Committee was also held up, and McCarthy and Perez have been blocked.

Dan DeWayne and Christine Myers know what it takes to organize an outdoor music festival with world-class music.? This is their seventeenth year producing the popular California WorldFest, held each summer under the shade of the tall pines at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, located just an hour?s drive from Sacramento.
??????
Known for an eclectic musical offering from around the world, this year?s California WorldFest will take place July 11 ? 14, with four days of music featuring rock super star Bruce Hornsby and Canadian Songwriter Bruce Cockburn, the worldly tunes of Pink Martini and the smoking Brazilian guitar of Badi Assad, plus the jumping dance music of Yemen Blues and Mali?s Vieux Farka Toure.
??????
?We have a cross section of music from all over the world. We really enjoy introducing people to music they may have never heard of,? said DeWayne.
??????
One example of that is Delhi 2 Dublin, a band playing Bhangra, Celtic and Electronica. First introduced to the North State at California WorldFest several years ago, Delhi 2 Dublin returns after much international fanfare, guaranteeing a dancing music meadow during their performance.
??????
In one weekend, festival attendees can expect to hear Israeli folk, Scottish fiddle, Zydeco and Cajun, Americana harmonies, Gypsy violin, Malian desert blues and more.? The Tibetan Monks are also sure to be a hit with opening and closing ceremonies, parades, meditation every morning, the weekend long creation of the sand mandala and ceremonial songs complete with 20-foot long horns.
??????
The multi-lingual, 15 piece band, Pink Martini is sure to be a big draw. Playing WorldFest as part of their tour that includes the Hollywood Bowl, the band has played with many of the finest orchestras and music halls around the world.
??????
Dan was a co-founder of the Strawberry Music Festival in Yosemite and he and Christine founded the Chico World Music Festival.? ?We?ve been involved with the arts for a long time,? said DeWayne, ?and the thrill of bringing music and families together to celebrate is a never ending joy.?
??????
Every year, the family-friendly festival draws crowds of 5,000 daily for music on eight stages, international food, arts and crafts, a Native Peoples? village, music lessons and quality children and teen programs.? Onsite camping is a popular draw for folks who want to slow down, share meals and music together and create long-lasting memories for the whole family.
??????
?More and more people are using WorldFest as a family reunion,? DeWayne said.? One of our favorite things about a festival is all ages can enjoy the fest together, and have their own unique experience.?
??????
DeWayne and Myers are committed to featuring great female artists on the California WorldFest stages,? Believing women represent at least half of the great music in the world, they continue to actively search for exceptional female artists to feature, with DeWayne pointing out Alison Brown, Martha Redbone, Rita Hosking, Briga, and RUNA as examples of great female-driven bands appearing this year.
??????
Young phenom Brittni Paiva will make an encore appearance at WorldFest with her Hawaiian ukulele,? fresh from a blazing impromptu live performance with Carlos Santana that has gone viral.? ?An amazing talent,? said DeWayne.
??????
California WorldFest has become a sought after venue for many musicians. This year, over 1,000 artists contacted DeWayne wanting to play in this summer?s lineup.? A Reno-based lyrical rock band called ?The Novelists? were selected to play at this year?s festival by a new online feature called, Fan?s Choice, giving people the voting power.? ?WorldFest fans are paying attention, listening to the music and voting and we can?t wait to introduce The Novelists to the WorldFest audience,? he said.
??????
World Music is a musical category that encompasses many different styles from around the world, including traditional and neo-traditional music and where cultural traditions intermingle.? Often asked to define World Music, DeWayne says, ?world music is folk music, meaning music played anywhere in the world by folks.? Great music transcends boundaries; when you hear a superb musician you automatically feel it, and that is what we strive for at WorldFest.?

For sale: A Pawleys Island original | Real Estate ...

It?s not often that buyers get a chance to buy a home with its own historic marker and even less frequently that the home sits on a beach.

But buyers who can spend $2.98 million can snap up the Joseph Blyth Alston House, also known as the Pawley House, on Pawleys Island, up for sale for the first time in more than two decades.

The house was originally built on the mainland in the mid 1700s, said Nancy Siau, a Realtor with The Lachicotte Co., which has the listing. She said it was moved to the island in the mid 1800s and Roman numerals put on the house to reconnect parts disconnected for the move are still visible.

Siau said that the current owner was advised to tear it down when she bought the property in the 1980s, but ?she saw the historic charm of it and wanted to preserve it.?

The original house was four rooms that today are the living and dining rooms and two upstairs bedrooms. An addition was put on the house in a renovation completed in 1992 that updated the home with modern amenities and added four more bedrooms, six bathrooms and a section of the wraparound porch. An elevator that goes from the parking area under the house to the first floor was added later.

The renovation was done to meld the new with the old appearance-wise, Siau said. For instance, all interior walls are wood, which was the composition of those in the original construction.

?It has a very rustic feel to it,? Siau said.

When it was moved from the mainland, it was barged across a creek to get it to the island and reconstructed on land once owned by S.C. Gov. R.F.W. Alston. It is believed to be one of the first, if not the first, summer residence on Pawleys Island.

Siau said that potential buyers must be pre-qualified before they can see the home, which is shown by appointment only. It was listed in mid-June and Siau said there has been a healthy amount of interest in it. Those who have toured the property so far have included South Carolinians and people from out of state.

Any buyer of oceanfront property considers the potential of storm damage, but Siau believes that is minimal for the Alston House. It is protected from the ocean by large dunes and a copse of trees. On the creek side of the house is a broad area of marshlands to absorb storm-driven hazards coming from that direction.

After all, Siau said, ?The house has survived two centuries of storms.?

No sweat

Area real estate pros say there?s nothing to worry about with South Carolina lingering in the top 10 states in foreclosure rate or Horry County having the fifth highest rate in the state.

The June statistics from RealtyTrac show that one in every 755 housing units statewide is in foreclosure while the number is one in every 556 in Horry County.

There are a couple of things that could make that so, according to Laurence Bolchoz, president of Coastal Carolina National Bank, and Laura Crowther, CEO of the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors.

Bolchoz said that because the Grand Strand is a real estate driven area and because all types of properties are part of the mix, it?s not surprising that the foreclosure rate would be higher than other, less diversified markets. His bank, he said, has not had to do any foreclosures.

Crowther noted that this area had a lot more foreclosures driven by second home mortgage failures so it should be expected that it would linger near the top of the list. But the numbers of foreclosures on the market is declining, she said.

?I don?t think that we have any shadow inventory where we can expect to see a jump in numbers,? Crowther said.

A report done recently for the association shows a continuing decline in the number of homes and condominiums on the market, down 6.1 percent and 14.1 percent respectively in the last year.

Additionally, there is an even greater decline in the number of months it would take to sell the current supply of each if no new properties were added to the list and demand remains where it is now. There are enough homes on the market to last 8.6 months, down 23.1 percent from the same time in 2012. The decline for condominiums over the last year was 23.1 percent to 10.1 months.

South Carolina?s rate ranked sixth nationwide, behind Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio and Nevada. Topping Horry in the S.C. county rankings were, from 1 to 4, Dorchester, York, Lexington and Berkeley.

The RealtyTrac report said that states that require foreclosures to be done by courts, known as judicial states, are the ones now leading the list. South Carolina is a judicial state, which Bolchoz and Crowther agreed could be a reason for South Carolina?s high ranking.

The report said that while foreclosure activity decreased by 14 percent nationwide in June to its lowest level since 2006, there was a 34 percent increase in judicial scheduled auctions.

Among the elite

Two Grand Strand real estate companies are among the top 250 nationally in the number of transactions representing either a buyer or seller, according to a 2013 ranking from REAL Trends and the Wall Street Journal.

According to the rankings, Blake Sloan of Sloan Realty Group in Myrtle Beach ranked No. 43 with 449 transaction sides, the industry term for representing either the buyer?s side or the seller?s side in a real estate transaction. Jerry Pinkas Real Estate Experts, also of Myrtle Beach, ranked in a four-way tie for No. 159 with 252 sides.

(AP) ? The name of a girl who died of injuries suffered in the crash-landing of an Asiana Airlines flight in San Francisco has emerged early Saturday.

Chinese state media identified her as Liu Yipeng (LEE'-ow EE'-peng). China News says she went to school with the other two victims killed in last week's accident, a pair of 16-year-old girls.

Liu Yipeng's identification comes a day after her death was announced amid the official confirmation that one of the other girls who died in the disaster had been covered on the runway in flame-retardant foam and hit by a fire truck speeding to the crash site, a disclosure that raised the tragic possibility she could have survived the crash only to die in its chaotic aftermath.

Liu Yipeng, whose name was first reported in the U.S. by KGO-TV, died Friday morning at San Francisco General Hospital where she had been in critical condition since the July 6 accident.

Friends and strangers have left condolences and lit virtual candles on Chinese social media sites in her memory.

Jianshang Education Bureau director Mao Zhuoxing confirmed Liu Yipeng's identity to China News. Her age was not disclosed. All three girls killed were from China.

No one knows yet whether the teenage victims lived through the initial impact at the San Francisco airport. But police and fire officials confirmed Friday that Ye Meng Yuan was hit by a fire truck racing to extinguish the blazing Boeing 777.

"The fire truck did go over the victim at least one time. Now the other question is, 'What was the cause of death?'" San Francisco police spokesman Albie Esparza said. "That's what we are trying to determine right now."

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said the results of his initial inquiry into the deaths would likely be released sometime next week. He would not comment on the police investigation.

Ye Meng Yuan's close friend Wang Linjia was among a group of injured passengers who did not get immediate medical help. Rescuers did not spot her until 14 minutes after the crash. Wang Linjia's body was found along with three flight attendants who were flung onto the tarmac.

Moments after the crash, while rescuers tried to help passengers near the burning fuselage, Wang Linjia and some flight attendants lay in the rubble almost 2,000 feet away. A group of survivors called 911 and tried to help them.

Survivors said that after escaping the plane, they sat with at least four victims who appeared to be seriously hurt. They believe one of them was one of the girls who died.

Cindy Stone, who was in that group, was recorded by California Highway Patrol dispatchers calling in for help: "There are no ambulances here. We've been on the ground 20 minutes. There are people lying on the tarmac with critical injuries, head injuries. We're almost losing a woman here. We're trying to keep her alive."

San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said Friday that when airport personnel reached the group near the seawall, Linjia was dead. She did not know when the girl had died.

    Several flight attendants remain hospitalized.

Talmadge also confirmed that an Associated Press photograph of a body under a yellow tarp near the burned-out jet was Ye Meng Yuan.

The photo, taken from above, shows firefighters looking down at the tarp, and there are truck track marks leading up to it.

Police said the teenager was covered in foam that rescuers had sprayed on the burning wreckage. When the truck moved while battling the flames, rescuers discovered her body, Esparza said.

"The driver may not have seen the young lady in the blanket of foam," said Ken Willette of the National Firefighter Protection Agency, which sets national standards for training airfield firefighters. "These could be factors contributing to this tragic event."

He said fire trucks that responded to the Asiana crash would have started shooting foam while approaching the fuselage from 80 or 100 feet away. The foam was sprayed from a cannon on the top of the truck across the ground to clear a safe path for evacuees. That was supposed to create a layer of foam on the ground that is several inches high before the truck gets to the plane.

The victims were close friends and top students, looking forward to spending a few weeks at a Christian summer camp in California, where they planned to practice English and boosting their chances of attending a U.S. college.

Their parents were flown to San Francisco after their deaths where the Chinese consulate was caring for them.

The crash-landing occurred after the airliner collided with a rocky seawall just short the runway. Dozens of passengers were hurt. There were 182 survivors taken to hospitals, though most suffered only minor injuries.

So far, an investigation indicates the pilots, a trainee and his instructor, failed to realize until too late that the aircraft was dangerously low and flying too slow.

Nothing disclosed so far by the National Transportation Safety Board investigators indicates any problems with the Boeing 777's engines, computers or automated systems.

Also, San Francisco airport officials said that the runway where the jet crashed was reopened Friday evening, and all airlines would resume normal schedules immediately.

NCAA blocks two former Prime Prep basketball stars from playing

Deion Sanders' Prime Prep Academy is in the crosshairs of the NCAA.

For months, News 8's Brett Shipp has been investigating the athletic program and curriculum of the charter school, which has been in business for just one year.

Now two graduates have learned their futures are in jeopardy.

Karviar Shepherd and Jordan Mickey, both Prime Prep grads who had signed to play basketball at TCU and LSU, respectively, have been declared ineligible by the NCAA.

The NCAA Eligibility Center says "sociology and social problems," a course at Prime Prep, does not qualify as a core high school course.

In its short one-year existence, Prime Prep has played by it's own rules.

When it wasn't allowed to compete against Texas high schools by the University Interscholastic League amid allegations of player recruiting, Prime Prep set up a national schedule, touring the country to play other top high school teams.

Prime Prep coach Ray Forsett was interviewed by the Louisville Courier Journal when the team played a game there this year.

"There wasn't a doubt that we were going to do whatever we had to do to make sure they played," he said. "They wanted to go to Prime Prep, and so so we wanted to make sure they trusted me and Mr. Wallace and Deion that they were going to play."

Prime Prep administrator D.L. Wallace did not return a phone call or e-mail for comment.

Deion Sanders posted this on Twitter:

"Please don't jump [to] any conclusions regarding 2 graduating seniors from PrimePrep whom received college scholarships. Time will tell. Truth."

The NCAA said the Prime Prep course is under review. Both students are at the college campuses where they planned to play next year. They can still enroll in those schools without a scholarship.

And the NCAA, upon further review, could change their eligibility. But for now, it's time out.

Missing property addresses, keys hamper Spain's 'bad bank'

    By Sarah White

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's "bad bank" not only has to sell the soured property loans and unwanted housing it took on from the country's rescued lenders - it first has to find them.

A review of the 51 billion euros ($66 billion) of property loans and buildings transferred to the state-run vehicle as part of the industry clean-up has uncovered swathes of incomplete records, including tens of thousands of missing addresses, three sources familiar with the process said.

Keys to the wrong homes have also been among the challenges faced by teams of lawyers and property experts hired to sift through the assets and value them, two of the sources said.

The administrative muddle risks delaying the sale of assets and ultimately how much money the bad bank, known as Sareb, is able to salvage from a property crash that drove many of the country's banks to require a European bailout.

Belen Romana, who chairs Sareb, said this week the bad bank had sold just 700 properties by June 1. Its target is to sell 45,000 properties in five years and it is aiming for an annual return on equity of 13 to 14 percent over its 15 year lifespan.

"The front office of Sareb looks like a merchant bank with people in pin-striped suits and nice ties," said a real estate broker familiar with the organization, which is trying to seal its first major sale of a portfolio of properties to investors.

"But behind the scenes ... you have an army of people in a warehouse scanning and filing documents and combing through data tapes. That's where the mess is."

    Sareb declined to comment.

    WRONG KEYS

Sareb's roughly 107,000 properties and 90,000 loans come from nine rescued lenders such as Bankia and Barcelona-based Catalunya Banc , and these banks still have the contract to manage the assets.

The loans are linked to another roughly 400,000 properties or tracts of land used as collateral, two of the sources said, adding that tens of thousands of those lacked proper addresses, hindering the valuation process.

"We had some addresses with just '4C' registered as the address, and with the name of a very common street in Spain," one of the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"You might also get 150 assets and addresses then realize they are all one same apartment hotel," the source added.

The review of the collateral has already delayed the valuation process by some weeks, the sources said. Thirteen firms including law firms, property consultants and accountants, led by Clifford Chance, are working on the process.

"There were instances with one of the banks involved where people went to check out a property and were given the wrong keys, or were told there was no-one living there and walked in and there was," a third source familiar with the process said.

Binding bids for the sale of Sareb's first portfolio of properties, of about 100 million euros, are due in mid-July, a source close to that situation said.

U.S. funds Lone Star, Cerberus Capital Management and Apollo Global Management are among those still in the running, the source said.

Protestants attack Belfast cops over blocked march

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Protestant hardliners attacked lines of Belfast riot police Friday as Northern Ireland's annual mass marches by the Orange Order brotherhood reached a furious, chaotic end with running street battles at several conflict zones.

In north Belfast, police in flame-retardant suits and helmets deployed a half-dozen armored cars to block a road so that Protestant Orangemen could not march past the edge of Ardoyne, a militant Catholic district that has become the most bitterly contested spot on the city map.

Men jumped on top of the armored barricade and, as hundreds of marchers and supporters formed a sea of often alcohol-fueled fury behind them, wielded pipes, golf clubs, wood planks and even ceremonial swords to vandalize the police vans.

Emboldened, some threw bottles and bricks point-blank into police lines. Many in the mob cheered as one policeman, struck and knocked semiconscious, was dragged to safety by colleagues.

Officers responded by firing a massive mobile water cannon at the rioters, propelling at least one shirtless man sideways off the roof of an armored car and on to the pavement, his forehead split open.

But the Protestant crowd kept swelling and hurling objects into police lines, forcing officers to respond with volleys of snub-nosed plastic bullets in a failed bid to force the crowd to disperse or retreat.

During melees that lasted for hours, police said at least 23 officers and several rioters were injured, as was the Protestant politician who represents north Belfast in British Parliament, Nigel Dodds.

Dodds was struck in the head with a brick and knocked unconscious while talking to Orangemen standing near the police barricade. His Democratic Unionist Party, the largest in Northern Ireland, later said he had regained consciousness in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

Leaders of the Orange Order vowed to keep Protestants rallying to the confrontation zone until police caved in and permitted the march past Ardoyne.

The police commander, Chief Constable Matt Baggott, said his force would stand its ground and gather video evidence against the many hundreds of rioters.

Police were enforcing a surprise decision by a British-appointed Parades Commission to bar the Orangemen from using the main road beside Ardoyne to return Friday night to their nearby lodge, the first time such an order had been given.

The cross-community commission said it wanted Orangemen to stay away from that 300-yard stretch of road because, for the previous four years, Irish Republican Army splinter groups based in Ardoyne had attacked police with gunfire, grenades, firebombs and other weapons and wounded more than 250 officers in clashes that always followed the Orangemen's passage.

Orangemen accused the commission of surrendering to IRA violence and warned that both sides could play that game.

More than 4,000 Northern Irish officers and 630 reinforcements imported from Britain were deployed to keep control of the streets for this year's "Twelfth," Northern Ireland's official sectarian holiday, when the British Protestant majority commemorates a 17th-century military victory over their Irish Catholic foes.

In a sign that police expect Protestants to riot all weekend, police installed portable toilets and stacked pallets of bottled water for officers manning the armored-car barricades near Ardoyne. Commanders requested several hundred more police reinforcements from Britain due to arrive Saturday.

Police also faced angry crowds around Short Strand, the only Catholic enclave in otherwise Protestant east Belfast. There, rival crowds of youths traded salvos of bottles, bricks, golf balls, bolts and ball bearings over high security fences called "peace lines." Police suffered barrages of firebombs from the Protestant side and responded with more water-cannon blasts.

Police advised motorists to avoid much of north and east Belfast to avoid becoming trapped in the mob violence.

Before the rioting began, Orange leaders marched to the Parades Commission headquarters and unfurled a banner that read, "We will not be defeated. No surrender."

Orange leaders laid blame in advance for any bloodshed on the Parades Commission, which since 1997 has imposed restrictions on Orange marches to minimize conflict with Catholic communities.

Arguments over Friday's violence threatened to create a rift in Northern Ireland's unity government, a 6-year-old coalition of political extremes that has governed Northern Ireland with surprising stability in fulfillment of the territory's 1998 peace accord.

First Minister Peter Robinson, a Protestant who leads the Democratic Unionist Party, blamed Short Strand's Catholics for starting the rioting in east Belfast and the Parades Commission for creating an explosive situation in Ardoyne.

Robinson said Protestants felt "justifiable anger and frustration at the Parades Commission, who bear much responsibility for the situation in Belfast as do those who attacked parades as they passed certain locations." But he said Protestants' attacks on police and Catholics "can never be justified and must stop."

His major Catholic partners in government, the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party, accused Robinson of blaming everyone but those most responsible: Orange Order leaders.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said Orange chiefs whipped Protestants into a frenzy and called their leadership "a disgrace."

His Sinn Fein colleague, Alex Maskey, called Robinson's response to the violence "disappointing and a failure in leadership."

Robinson is seeking an emergency recall of the Northern Ireland Assembly next week to debate the reasons for barring the Orangemen from Ardoyne and the causes of Friday's disorder.

"The Twelfth" commemorates the July 12, 1690, triumph of Protestant King William of Orange against the Catholic he dethroned, James II, in the Battle of the Boyne south of Belfast.

The Orange Order, founded in 1795 as a force for uniting often-feuding Protestant denominations under one anti-Catholic banner, was instrumental in creating Northern Ireland in 1921 shortly before the predominantly Catholic rest of Ireland won independence from Britain.

Catholic clashes with police over Protestant marches triggered the rise of Northern Ireland's modern conflict in 1969. The issue has defied resolution despite a two-decade peace process that has delivered paramilitary cease-fires, British military withdrawals, police reform and a power-sharing government.

Friday's approximately 550 Orange parades attracted unusually heavy crowds of spectators, who brought lawn chairs to the roadsides and basked in exceptional sunshine on what was the hottest, muggiest day of the year.

Among the Belfast spectators, many bedecked in Union Jack-patterned hats and sunglasses, was a sleeping infant bearing a bib that read, "My 1st Twelfth."

Hamm taking plunge into sports world as ESPYs host

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Jon Hamm is going from a presenter to host of the ESPY Awards, a natural segue for the former three-sport prep athlete who is unabashed in his love for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals.

Hamm called himself a "pretty good" high school player, but is quick to note he was never a threat to make it in the professional ranks.

That's why the 42-year-old actor best known as Don Draper on AMC's "Mad Men" wants to keep the focus on the athletes when he hosts the annual show honoring the year's best sports moments. It airs live on ESPN on July 17 from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

"When you look at someone else who is excellent at what they do, you can't help but be jealous," Hamm said Thursday. "When you look at what David Freese did in the 2011 World Series, that's performance at the highest level with all the chips on the table."

Freese had two key hits in the late innings of Game 6 against Texas that year, helping the Cardinals force a Game 7, which they won.

"I don't want to disrespect any Blues fans, but the Cardinals are No. 1 in my heart," he said, adding that the Cardinals and NHL's Blues are "1 and 1-A" in his rooting order.

At John Burroughs High in suburban St. Louis, Hamm was on the football, baseball and swimming teams, lettering in all three sports.

"I loved it. A lot of those guys I played on those teams with I'm still pretty good friends with," he said. "It's important for young kids to get out there and move around, especially in the kind of high-fructose environment we have these days."

Hamm is hosting the ESPYs just as he wraps filming on the Disney movie "The Million Dollar Arm," in which he plays a sports agent.

Hosting an awards show is not like hosting "Saturday Night Live," he noted. "But I've never had a problem standing up in front of people making a fool of myself, and I'm sure that will happen at least once during the telecast."

As someone who's been nominated for his share of acting trophies, Hamm knows what it's like to sit in the audience for an awards show.

"You kind of want it to go fast because there's fun parties afterwards," he said, noting that the best hosts "always kind of keep it moving, keep it light, and give you some laughs."

Among the scheduled presenters are LeBron James, Ben Affleck, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Selena Gomez, Danica Patrick, Maria Sharapova, Jason Sudeikis, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen.

Police Search for Alleged Wedding Gift Thief

Police have released a photo of a man they suspect has stolen thousands of dollars worth of gifts from weddings in Pennsylvania.

The suspect has allegedly stolen at least $6,000 worth of cash, gift cards and checks from two weddings, one on June 29, and another on July 7, according to ABC station WPVI in Philadelphia.

"It's really upsetting," Stacey Havlik, 32, of Ardmore, Pa., told ABC News. Havlik was a bride who had at least $3,000 worth of gifts stolen from her June 29 wedding.

"It really put a damper on our wedding. We missed a really fun time that we could have been enjoying," she said.

The suspect is a male with a chin strap and tattoos on his arm and neck, according to surveillance footage the Lower Gwynedd Police Department released to ABC station WPVI in Philadelphia on July 10.

The video was taken at the William Penn Inn in Gwynedd, the location of the July 7 alleged theft, WPVI reports.

"We had a bird cage on a table where guests could put their gifts," Havlik said. "At the end of our wedding my mom realized the bird cage was missing. Nobody saw it so we called the police."

The theft was not captured on surveillance video but guests told Havlik they had seen a man with a chin strap, beard and tattoos.

"I got a call from the police on July 10 saying that they believed there was a connection between the two thefts," Havlik said.

"Police showed my wedding guests and I the surveillance footage of this man and my guests immediately recognized him as the same guy," Havlik said.

The Lower Gwynedd Police Department did not return repeated calls for comment.

Havlik is still working with her insurance company to assess the value of her stolen gifts.

"It's really embarrassing to have to ask guests what they gave you. I'm not comfortable asking them to send the gifts again," Havlik said.

WPVI reported that police were also investigating a third theft they believe might also be linked to the two others.
