The Latest on "Honey Boo Boo" | Famecrawler

01 honey boo boo family1 300x212 Whats New With Honey Boo Boo?

We'll be seeing more of Honey Boo Boo's family soon.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo aired its season finale last night on TLC ? which should leave you feeling either disappointed or relieved, depending on which side of the Love It/Loathe It fence you?re on.

For the last few weeks, our national attention has been drawn to the antics of Alana ?Honey Boo Boo? Thompson and her unique family. Jimmy Kimmel even made a joke about the show in the first few minutes of the Emmys broadcast. Meanwhile, Honey Boo Boo and her mother ?Mama June? Shannon have become the hottest reality personalities in town.

So if you think we won?t be hearing about the family for a while now that the show is on hiatus, think again! Here?s what we?ve found out about Alana and her clan in just the last couple of days?

They?ll be home for the holidays. And on our home TVs, too. According to Us Weekly, TLC has ordered more episodes of the hit series, which will feature Honey Boo Boo, Mama June, Sugar Bear, Pumpkin, Chubbs and Chickadee celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sugar Bear is back home. After an ATV accident, Alana?s dad, Mike ?Sugar Bear? Thompson developed an infection in his leg that landed him in the hospital for nearly two weeks. It was thought that he might need surgery ? and possibly even require amputation. But the infection has cleared up with strong doses of antibiotics, and cameras caught him returning home yesterday.

Little Kaitlyn won?t be getting corrective surgery yet. On last night?s episode, June?s oldest daughter, Anna ?Chickadee? Shannon, gives birth to a baby girl. Viewers also learned that the baby has an unusual birth condition ? two thumbs on her right hand. But contrary to what you may think, the condition isn?t necessarily easy to correct. June recently explained that the extra appendage will be staying for a while. ?The doctor doesn?t want to do anything right now because they don?t know the full function of the other thumb or if they?re connected,? she says. Removing the thumb might cause Kaitlyn to lose function in the rest of her hand. ?They don?t want to make any rash decisions.?

The family is enjoying its fifteen minutes of fame. June bristles at the suggestion that she?s harming Alana and her sisters in any way by doing the show. ?I don?t exploit Alana,? she told RadarOnline. ?I would never exploit my kids. Critics are critics, and everyone has their opinions, but I am not doing anything wrong. It?s always been about fun, and it?s an experience in life they can look back at. We watch the show and wish they put in more stuff!?

They may be getting more money for the show. Holla?! According to an insider source, the family is negotiating a higher salary for a new season, and will probably end up receiving around $8,000 per episode. Still, that?s nowhere near the $30 million the Kardashian family reportedly is receiving for their next three seasons.

They?re not as unusual as you might think. Okay, not everyone tries owning a miniature pig or goes on the kiddie beauty-pageant circuit. But in one aspect, June and her daughters are very much like many of their fellow Georgia families: Nearly 40 percent of families in the state are at risk of health problems related to childhood obesity. A major Georgia pediatric hospital issued a statement: ?[B]ased on the children and families we see at Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta, the truth is that Honey Boo Boo and her family?s health habits may be more of the norm in Georgia than everyone would like to believe.?

Will you be redneckognizing this fun bunch next season?

Anti-Muslim film producer arrested in probation case

A judge will decide whether or not Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the producer behind the 'Innocence of Muslims' film, violated the terms of his 2010 conviction on bank fraud charges. NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

By NBC News staff and NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the Cerritos man who many believe to be behind an anti-Muslim video that has inflamed the Islamic world, was arrested Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles said.

?

Nakoula faced a 3 p.m. hearing Thursday on charges that he violated the terms of his parole, U.S. Attorney spokesman Thom Mrozek told NBC4 News. The arrest was sought by officials of the United States Probation Office, he said.

Nakoula was indicted for check fraud in 2009 and then convicted. As a condition of his parole, he was forbidden to post information on the Internet without permission from his parole officer.

He is believed to be the producer of the film, "Innocence of Muslims," which depicted the Prophet Mohammed as a pedophile.

A self-described Coptic Christian who was born in Egypt, Nakoula is said to go by the pseudonym Sam Bassiel. That moniker that caused widespread confusion when the film was first released earlier this month when someone associated with the film said that the producer was an Israeli Jew with that name.

Others have disputed that the video was the cause of the violence in Libya. On Wednesday, Libyan President Mohammed Magarief said that the attacks on the U.S. Consulate there were carefully planned terrorist events, not the actions of a mob angry about the video.

Suspected anti-Islam filmmaker questioned

The amateurish film, which was distributed online, prompted riots throughout the Middle East, and was cited as a cause for the violence that led to the deaths of U.S. diplomats and others in Libya. Among those killed were U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others.

In an interview with NBC's Ann Curry, Libya's president Mohammed Magarief said there's 'no doubt' the attack that killed four Americans in Libya was preplanned, and not a result of the controversial anti-Islam movie that sparked violent protests.

Op-Ed: Want to Improve School Districts? Listen to Teachers

I sat at the offices of Los Angeles Unified School District?s Board of Education waiting for the Board to allow public comments on a resolution that would block the district?s ability to measure my impact as a teacher.

The resolution calls for the elimination of using students? progress on state tests to measure my effectiveness. Granted, state tests aren?t perfect, but they do serve as a profound piece in evaluating a key responsibility I have as a teacher.

I scrambled to gather my thoughts. What could I say in three minutes that would instill a sense of urgency within the Board to put aside politics and come together to stand against this resolution? I was beginning to wonder if my words as a teacher would matter.

More: Teach Plus Executive Director: Why We Need to Rethink the Teaching Profession

It troubled me to see that teachers? feedback on this resolution was pooled with all the public comments, and that our specific expertise was given no weight or respect. The current reality for teachers within LAUSD is that we are part of a broken system of collaboration.

I am an educator who has accomplished much for my students, both for their social and academic development. But the district continually demonstrates its inability to formally incorporate my voice, along with the countless other dedicated teachers who greatly impact student achievement every day, in developing policies that would effectively elevate the teaching profession.

The system fails to enable its key stakeholders?teachers?to have a voice at the table.

Teachers? voices should not be treated as ?public comments? that the Board of Education occasionally invites to conversations where high stakes policies are implemented?policies that often lack the buy-in of many accomplished teachers. Currently, formal structures to allow teachers to impact policy at the district level are few and far between. The system fails to enable its key stakeholders, teachers, to have a voice at the table.

As teachers, we drive the everyday work the district and Board hope to achieve. We must be offered meaningful opportunities to share our perspectives with district and union officials through formal collaborative structures. In a truly collaborative environment, Board members would examine and vote on policy initiatives that are developed by teacher leaders alongside district and union leaders.?

My work as a Los Angeles Teaching Policy Fellow with Teach Plus this past year has enabled me to define what it means to be a teacher leader who seeks to shape policies while remaining within the classroom. The fellowship experience has offered me opportunities to work with district leaders on initiatives ranging from teacher preparation to performance, as well as pathways to impact education policies at the state and national levels.?

I traveled to New York to participate in the International Summit on the Teaching Profession; earlier this month I served on a panel about the future of the teaching profession at the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality in Washington, D.C. More importantly, the fellowship has enabled me to envision an effective system of collaboration between teachers and district officials that would allow us to develop and sustain a high-quality teaching force that places student achievement at the center.

But as my fellowship experience comes to an end, I am beginning to wonder if now I can only rely on three-minute ?public comments? at Board of Education meetings to voice my experience and ideas as an LAUSD teacher leader.

The district can do better with soliciting and listening to teachers? voices, as it has shown through its work with the Teaching Policy Fellows. But we shouldn?t need to rely on outside organizations to create these pathways: Districts must develop ongoing, established structures for teacher leaders to share the lessons we?ve learned from our practice and from working in successful school cultures.

If districts prioritize placing teachers at the center of the education conversation, they will be able to design policies around effective evaluation, professional development, and more to build, sustain, and celebrate a high-quality teaching force.

Looking Back at IMAX's Precursor

Film scene shot in Cinerama format

IMAX remains one of the coolest ways to see movies these days ? the resolution and image quality are simply stunning when compared to a traditional presentation. However, long before there was IMAX as we know it, a man named Fred Waller created a precursor to the format ? a system known as Cinerama. David Bordwell has recently written a fantastic article on Cinerama and how it worked. It?s interesting stuff if you?re curious about the history of film presentation.

I?ll leave the finer details to Bordwell?s piece (which I highly recommend reading) because he explains it all far better than I ever could. However, the gist of the Cinerama system was that it used three projectors to show an image on a deeply curved screen in a way that attempted to replicate not only how we see things directly in front of us, but from our peripheral vision as well. On top of that, it also featured an early take on modern-day surround sound ? with everything working together to create the most lifelike moviegoing experience of the era.

Unfortunately, Cinerama never really caught on. The system debuted in 1952, but didn?t last long. The problem was that it was too complicated (check out the schematic below for an idea of just how complicated) and required expensive upgrades to existing theaters. Adding the huge screens (some 100 feet wide and 30 feet high, with a 146 degree curve in them) and multiple projectors just wasn?t cost effective back in those days. This says nothing of the challenges for filmmakers when it came to shooting in the format.

Yet, while the format didn?t exactly set the box office on fire, Mr. Waller?s work did at least help pave the way for IMAX and the modern movie-viewing experience. He (and Cinerama) certainly deserve a tip of the hat for that.?

Dawn suggests special delivery of hydrated material to Vesta

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The mechanism by which water is incorporated into the terrestrial planets is a matter of extensive debate for planetary scientists. Now, observations of Vesta by NASA's Dawn mission suggest that hydrous materials were delivered to the giant asteroid mainly through a build-up of small particles during an epoch when the Solar System was rich in dust.

This is a radically different process from the way in which hydrous materials are deposited on the moon and may have implications for the formation of terrestrial planets, including the delivery of the water that forms Earth's oceans. Maria Cristina De Sanctis and the Dawn team will present the scenarios at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid on Sept. 26.

De Sanctis, of the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Planetology in Rome, said, "Vesta's surface shows distinct areas enriched with hydrated materials. These regions are not dependent on solar illumination or temperature, as we find in the case of the Moon. The uneven distribution is unexpected and indicates ancient processes that differ from those believed to be responsible for delivering water to other airless bodies, like the Moon."

A team led by De Sanctis studied data from Dawn's visible and infrared (VIR) mapping spectrometer. Analysis showed large regional concentrations of hydroxyl -- a hydrogen and an oxygen atom bound together -- clearly associated with geological features including ancient, highly-cratered terrains and the Oppia crater.

Hydroxyl on the surface of the Moon is thought to be created continuously by the interaction of protons from the solar wind with the lunar regolith. Highest concentrations are found in areas near the lunar poles and in permanently shadowed crater where it is very cold. By contrast, the distribution of hydroxyl on Vesta is not dependent on significant shadowing or unusual cold temperatures. It is also stable over time, so its origin does not appear to be due to short-term processes.

The hydroxyl-rich regions on Vesta broadly correspond to its oldest surfaces. Around relatively large and young impact craters, hydroxyl detections are weak or absent, suggesting that the delivery of hydroxyl is not an ongoing process.

The evidence from VIR suggests that much of Vesta's hydroxyl was delivered by small particles of primitive material, less than a few centimeters in diameter, over a time-limited period. This period may have occurred during the primordial solar system, around the time it is believed water was accreted on Earth, or during the Late Heavy Bombardment, when collisions would have produced a significant amount of primitive material dust.

However, this is not the whole story of hydrous materials on Vesta. The Oppia Crater is hydroxyl-rich, but not covered with the primitive material. This suggests that there is more than one mechanism at work for depositing hydroxyl on Vesta's surface.

De Sanctis said, "The origin of Vesta's hydroxyl is certainly complex and possibly not unique: there could be various sources, like formation of hydroxyl actually on Vesta, in addition to the primordial impactors. Vesta is providing new insights into the delivery of hydrous materials in the main asteroid belt, and may offer new scenarios on the delivery of hydrous minerals in the inner Solar System, suggesting processes that may have played a role in the formation of terrestrial planets."

Primate study adds to evidence of BPA harming human reproduction

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

A Washington State University researcher has found new evidence that the plastic additive BPA can disrupt women's reproductive systems, causing chromosome damage, miscarriages and birth defects.

Writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, WSU geneticist Patricia Hunt and colleagues at WSU and the University of California, Davis, report seeing reproductive abnormalities in rhesus monkeys with BPA levels similar to those of humans. By using an animal with the most human-like reproductive system, the research bolsters earlier work by Hunt and others documenting widespread reproductive effects in rodents.

"The concern is exposure to this chemical that we're all exposed to could increase the risk of miscarriages and the risk of babies born with birth defects like Down Syndrome," says Hunt. "The really stunning thing about the effect is we're dosing grandma, it's crossing the placenta and hitting her developing fetus, and if that fetus is a female, it's changing the likelihood that that female is going to ovulate normal eggs. It's a three-for-one hit."

The research also adds to the number of organs affected by BPA, or bisphenol A, which is found in plastic bottles, the linings of aluminum cans and heat-activated cash register receipts. This May, Hunt was part of another paper in PNASreporting that the additive altered mammary development in the primate, increasing the risk of cancer.

Hunt's colleagues at UC, Davis exposed different groups of gestating monkeys to single daily doses of BPA and low-level continuous doses and looked at how they affected the reproductive systems of female fetuses. She saw that in the earliest stage of the adult's egg development, the egg cell failed to divide properly. Earlier mouse studies showed similar disturbances translated into genetic defects in the mature egg.

A fertilized egg with the wrong number of chromosomes will almost always fail to come to term, leading to a spontaneous abortion or progeny with birth defects.

In monkeys exposed continuously, Hunt saw further complications in the third trimester as fetal eggs were not packaged appropriately in follicles, structures in which they develop. Eggs need to be packaged properly to grow, develop and mature.

"That's not good," says Hunt, "because it looks to us like you're just throwing away a huge number of the eggs that a female would have. It raises concerns about whether or not she's going to have a really short reproductive lifespan."

Does the State Income Tax Code Provide a Significant Penalty for

DOR Floats Ideas for Reducing Income Taxes for Married Couples

The budget request submitted by the Dept. of Revenue last week does something that struck me as unusual ? it raises a concern about the current tax code and lays out a range of options to mitigate the alleged problem, but doesn?t endorse any of them.? Specifically, the department explains that although Wisconsin?s income tax code attempts to avoid imposing higher state income taxes for married couples than for unmarried partners, it doesn?t fully succeed in that regard.

The DOR budget request lays out six possible approaches for mitigating the concern that married couples will sometimes have to pay higher income taxes than similarly situated individuals or unmarried couples. Those options range in cost from about $63 million in the 2013-15 biennium to $734 million during that period.? One option that I was very disappointed not to see in the DOR list is to mitigate the significant marriage penalty in the Homestead Tax Credit.

An article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel discusses the marriage penalty issue and the DOR musings about possibly addressing it.? The article cites a couple of concerns or considerations that I raised with the reporter, Jason Stein, about potentially forfeiting a large chunk of state tax revenue to address the issue.? To elaborate on those points, here are some of the questions I think policymakers need to grapple with:

  • Would we make the tax system more regressive (or less so) if we offset the lost revenue with other tax changes??
  • If the cost of eliminating or offsetting the marriage penalty is offset with spending cuts rather than additional revenue, what effect would that have on important state and local services and benefits for Wisconsin families??
  • Considering the many financial benefits of marriage for most couples, is the marriage penalty in the income tax code much of a disincentive to marriage??
  • Should we take a broader look and consider other marriage penalties that might create greater disincentives to marriage, such as some of the eligibility and cost-sharing policies for public benefit programs??
Those questions aside, I give DOR credit for letting us know that they are considering this matter, even though they aren?t ready to make a recommendation.? Although that might be an unorthodox thing to do in a department?s budget proposal, I applaud them for: giving us a heads up that the issue is being reviewed, explaining that there?s more than one way to address the concern, and giving interested persons an opportunity to weigh in.? All too often we don?t hear anything about major proposals until they appear in a Governor?s budget or budget repair bill or in a late night Joint Finance Committee amendment.

We?ll follow up on this issue after we?ve had a chance to analyze the alternatives, including their effects on tax equity and the broader fiscal implications.
