Police questioning man in NYC woman's fire death (AP)

NEW YORK ? A man smelling of gasoline walked into a police station overnight and implicated himself in the death of a woman set on fire in the elevator of her apartment building, police said Sunday.

The 47-year-old man, who hasn't been charged, said he had started a fire, said New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne. The man's identity hasn't been released.

Deloris Gillespie, 64, was ambushed in the elevator of her Brooklyn apartment building on Saturday afternoon, doused with an accelerant and set afire with a Molotov cocktail, Browne said. The suspect had been waiting for her when the elevator doors opened to the fifth floor of her apartment building in Prospect Heights, police said.

"It was apparent he knew she was on the elevator," he said Saturday.

The attack happened shortly after 4 p.m., lasted about a minute and was recorded by two video cameras, including one inside the small elevator.

The video showed the elevator doors opening to the floor where Gillespie's apartment was located and the assailant stepping in and spraying her, Browne said.

Gillespie, who had grocery bags in her arms, turned about 180 degrees and then crouched to protect herself, he said. But the man sprayed her directly in the face and continued to spray her "sort of methodically" over her head and parts of her body as the bags draped off her arms, Browne said. She turned and retreated to the back of the elevator.

Then, Browne said, the suspect pulled out a barbecue-style lighter, used it to ignite a rag in a bottle and then waited for a few seconds before using the flames to set her afire, causing smoke to fill the elevator.

The man backed out as she fell to the floor of the elevator, Browne said, and seemed to pause before tossing the bottle inside the elevator and onto her.

Browne wouldn't comment on a motive in the killing but said the suspect knew Gillespie.

Police released still images of the man Saturday night, showing him in a black jacket, wearing what appear to be surgical gloves and with a white dust mask perched atop his head like a pair of sunglasses. He is holding what appears to be a canister with a nozzle and spraying as he steps into the elevator.

Neighbors reported a fire in the building, unaware that the woman was burning to death in the elevator.

Residents were evacuated and kept away from the six-story building for hours Saturday night as police investigated.

Is Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol "the best action movie of the year"? (The Week)

New York ? Surprise, surprise. The majority of critics are heaping praise on the fourth installment in the M:I franchise, the first live-action flick directed by Pixar's Brad Bird

Star Tom Cruise may be pushing 50 and the franchise 15, but critics are finding a lot to like in Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol, which opens in IMAX and select theatres Friday and goes wide the following week. In the fourth M:I flick, Cruise resumes his role as renegade spy Ethan Hunt while vaunted Pixar writer-director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille) ably takes the helm of his first live-action film. One commentator calls it "the best action movie of the year." Really?

Yes! This is it, "at long last, the year's best action flick," says Andrew O'Hehir at Salon. Who knew "an aging star often viewed as a weirdo" and an animation director had it in them? Bird's stylish, energetic direction makes you wonder "why the hell" he hasn't made more movies by age 54, while Cruise embues a messy, long-haired Ethan Hunt with an easy charisma. The film "has not just one or two but four or five of the most coherent and exciting action sequences in recent history," including a "beautifully choreographed" finale in a parking garage in Mumbai. "This is pure escapist cinema at its best, without morality or apology or guilt."
"Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol: At long last, the year?s best action flick"

It's impressive, but frustratingly flawed: "From a purely technical standpoint, Ghost Protocol ranks toward the top of the list of the year's best studio-made blockbusters," says Ethan Alter at Television Without Pity. Still, I expected more from Bird, given that The Incredibles is "one of the finest superhero movies ever." Not enough of his unique style comes across here. Other problems: A thin plot and a forgettable supporting cast ? from Paula Patton's "wooden" turn as the "designated hot girl" to Simon Pegg's half-hearted attempt at comic relief. Still, compared to the "obnoxious, sloppily-made" Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, also out this week, Ghost Protocol is "the second coming of Star Wars."
"Battle of the blockbusters: Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"

This franchise is tired: "The seams are showing badly in this fourth Mission: Impossible movie," says Marshall Fine at Hollywood & Fine. It's a jumble of action sequences held together by that "familiar excuse for a plot: the brilliant maniac who has to be stopped before he triggers a world-wide conflagration." Though the script tries hard to be funny, it's corny rather than truly amusing. At their best, the Mission Impossible films were about the hero outsmarting the villain, not "outrunning or outgunning him." Kids might embrace this film, but for anyone craving intelligence and sublety, there's too much sensation here and too little savvy.

Apple co-founder Ron Wayne's stash of early documents (eyes-on)

About a week ago, we traveled to the desert to spend two days with Ron Wayne. The 77-year-old Pahrump, Nevada resident has had a number of careers in his long life, working for Atari, a few slot machine companies, developing devices for use on the ocean floor and running a collectables shop in Northern California. In his semi-retired state, Wayne sells stamps and coins to supplement his checks from the government. He's no doubt best known, however, for his role in the founding of the Apple Computer company, alongside Steves Jobs and Wozniak, a role at which he spent a little more than a week.

During our time in Pahrump, Wayne was kind enough to let us comb over a number of papers from his days with the nascent computer company. The documents, stashed in a USPS mailer kept by the door of his office, were a veritable treasure trove of information, including pages of pages of plans and pencils drawings of an Apple I enclosure Jobs asked Wayne to build -- his creation was ultimately rejected by Apple and lost to history as the company gained steam.

Also stored in the envelope were a facsimile of the contract signed by Wayne, Woz and Jobs, which recently sold on auction for more than $1 million -- in fact, it was Wayne's original copy that hit the auction block. He had parted ways with it for far, far less some time ago. Wayne's Statement of Withdrawal is in the pile as well -- the document effectively ended his term with the company, filed for a $5 fee. Also inside are an Apple I operation manual, with the company's original logo, designed by Wayne himself and an Apple II order form. Check out all of the above in the gallery below.

How Apple really came to 'Think Different': 5 takeaways (The Week)

New York ? In Forbes, Rob Siltanen, one of men who worked on the Apple's landmark 1997 ad campaign, details how it all came to be

Apple's 1997 "Think Different" ad campaign is credited with helping turn around the then-struggling computer company. The print ads featured black and white photos of various revolutionary thinkers, including MLK, Thomas Edison, and Gandhi. The iconic TV spot began with the now-famous voiceover "Here's to the Crazy Ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers." (Watch it below.) Just how the legendary campaign came to be has been a matter of debate, but Rob Siltanen, who was creative director at the ad agency that pitched the idea to Steve Jobs, sets the record straight in a column at Forbes. Here, five takeaways from his story:???

1. It wasn't Steve Jobs' idea
In his Steve Jobs biography, Walter Isaacson "incorrectly suggests Jobs created and wrote much of the 'To the crazy ones' launch commercial," says Siltanen. "To me, this is a case of revisionist history." While Jobs was heavily involved in Apple's advertising, he didn't initially like the commercial that played "a pivotal role in helping Apple achieve one of the greatest corporate turnarounds in business history."

2. Jobs didn't initially want a TV campaign
In 1997, when Jobs met with various ad agencies about coming up with a campaign to help what was then a "hemorrhaging" company, he initially just asked for "some print ads in the computer magazines until we get things figured out." Siltanen disagreed, telling Jobs, "Nobody stands around the water cooler talking about print ads. You need to do something bigger and bolder."

3. Jobs was hesitant to go with the idea
When TBWA/Chiat/Day, the agency where Siltanen then worked, presented the concept, which included a mood video set to Seal's "Crazy" to help convey the idea in the print ads, Jobs was impressed but hesitant. "This is really great ? but I can't do this," Siltanen recalls him saying. "People already think I'm an egotist, and putting the Apple logo up there with all these geniuses will get me skewered by the press." He quickly changed his mind, saying, "Screw it. It's the right thing. It's great."
?
4. The commercial's copy was inspired by Dead Poet's Society
After Jobs approved the idea, the agency was charged with cutting the mood video from several minutes into a 60-second spot. The original version, never intended to be a commercial, relied heavily on the song lyrics, but they were lost in the editing. Inspired by Dead Poet's Society, Siltanen wrote a short manifesto to convey the same message ? "To the crazy ones. Here's to the misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The people who see the world differently" ? imagining Robin Williams speaking the words. Jobs initially called the copy "crap" and "advertising agency shit," Siltanen recalls. Another writer, Ken Segall, tweaked it, and eventually Jobs came around. But Robin Williams wanted no part in advertising, so it was Richard Dreyfuss who spoke the lines.?

5. The campaign had a real impact
"When the 'Think Different' campaign launched, Apple immediately felt the boost despite having no significant new products," says Siltanen. Within twelve months, Apple's stock price tripled. A year after the campaign launched, Apple released the jellybean-colored iMacs, which were heralded for their design and sold like gangbusters. "Without the 'Think Different' campaign preceding and supporting them, it's likely [they] would have been viewed by the press and general public as just more 'toys' from Apple."

Apple update twofer: Apple TV hits 4.4.4 (9A406a), minor iOS 5.0.1 bump hits iPhone 4S

Here's a question: why, as a major consumer electronics company, would you introduce just one software update in a day, when you could just as easily introduce two? Exactly. Apple has just pushed out a new duo that honestly have little in common, but if you're the owner of a second-generation Apple TV and an iPhone 4S, you've hit the jackpot. The former is reaching v4.4.4, which claims to bring an assortment of not-big-enough-to-pinpoint bug fixes; the latter, however, tweaks the iPhone 4S' 5.0.1 build ever so slightly. If you've noticed anything major from either update, do tell in comments below.
